HAPPY WORLD POETRY DAY TO NORBA COMMUNITY

"Everything is Going to be All Right", by Derek Mahon

Many thanks to our former assistant teacher Sean O'Reily, who let us know this great Irish poet.

How should I not be glad to contemplate
the clouds clearing beyond the dormer window
and a high tide reflected on the ceiling?
There will be dying, there will be dying,
but there is no need to go into that.
The poems flow from the hand unbidden
and the hidden source is the watchful heart.
The sun rises in spite of everything
and the far cities are beautiful and bright.
I lie here in a riot of sunlight
watching the day break and the clouds flying.
Everything is going to be all right.

from Selected Poems

Derek Mahon (23 November 1941 – 1 October 2020) was an Irish poet. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland but lived in a number of cities around the world. At his passing it was noted that his "influence in the Irish poetry community, literary world and society at large, and his legacy, is immense". President of Ireland Michael D Higgins said of Mahon "he shared with his northern peers the capacity to link the classical and the contemporary but he brought also an edge that was unsparing of cruelty and wickedness."

EXERCISE 2 (REPHRASING)

MEMORY GAME

The students of 2ESOB participated in an activity set up by Roberto and Manu that was all about memorising and vocabulary. Each student brought in an object with a description of a few words about it, and all the objects were displayed in a separate room. The class was split into groups of four/five where each student had roughly one minute to look at all of the objects and descriptions and memorise as many as they good. They then had to report back to Manu and list every object they remembered using the vocabulary in the description. This was a great way to test their vocabulary for talking about objects and their worth, physical description, and meaning behind certain objects. The items were very varied. They consisted of things such as: a football jersey, a dreamcatcher, a CD given as a gift, etc.
